Located just 70 miles east of San Diego, the Coronado Naval Base has more than 5,000 active civilians and duty. The base is actually a large network of Navy installations. There are 8 installations total in Navy Base Coronado: Naval Air Station North Island, an aerospace-industrial complex, Outlying Field Imperial beach, a facility for helicopters, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, one of the US’s biggest shore command centers, Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island, a large military airport, Silver Strand Training Complex, a well-respected Special Forces training facility, La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Facility, which is used by the Naval Special Warfare Center, and the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Facility Warner Springs. These facilities total more than 57,000 acres, which makes Naval Base Coronado the largest Navy command point in the southwest US.
Naval Base Coronado employs more than 36,000 people, both civilians and active military. In fact, the base has the largest work force in San Diego County. NBC employs more than 30% of the areas work force, making a serious difference in the local economy.
