Point Mugu NAS

Point Mugu NAS, or Naval Air Station Point Mugu, is located in Ventura county, California. Before 2000, Point Mugu was its own organization. Today, after some Naval realignment actions in 2000, NAS Point Mugu is now part of Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC). This NAS also shared runway space with the National Guard at the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station.

Originally formed in the early 1940’s, Point Mugu was built for a missile development and test facility for the US Navy. This base played a very important role in the US Military during the 1950’s and 60’s, serving as the #1 testing and development location for Navy missiles. Back then, as well as today, NAS Point Mugu is almost completely surrounded by agriculture. However, just outside the station you will find Point Mugu State Park, a protected area of around 15,000 acres. The park is a popular destination for viewing birds, marine life, and wildflowers. The park is widely varied, and includes beaches, coastal hills, canyons, and more. Since the wildlife there is protected by the law, you can see some truly amazing and rare animals wandering the grounds, just outside of Point Mugu NAS.
