Naval Air Station Mayport is located in Duval County, Florida. It is a major US Navy Base, and is just adjacent to the town of Jacksonville. It contains Admiral David L Mcdonald Field, a mid-sized military airfield.
Originally commissioned in December 1942, NS Mayport has continued to grow in size and reputation. Today, it boasts the 3rd-largest naval fleet concentration in the United States. It has a very busy harbor, which is able to accommodate up to 34 large ships, and a good sized runway that is capable of launching almost any aircraft the Navy or Department of Defense has. Mayport Naval Station plays home to the United States 4th Fleet, which was actually deactivated in the 1950’s, and only reactivated a few years ago.
Commanded by Captain Aaron L. Bowman, Mayport Naval Station is homeport to several full-sized conventionally powered aircraft carriers of the Atlantic fleet, including USS Shangri-La, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and 3 others. Few Navy stations host that many aircraft carriers, so Mayport NS is unique in that way.
