Naval Base Kitsap

Naval Base Kitsap is one of 3 navy bases in Washington State, and is located on the Kitsap peninsula. It’s a recent addition to the navy lineup, as it was actually created in 2004. The base was not really “built” specifically, but it was actually made up of 2 bases that were intended to be closed, but were combined instead. These two bases were Naval Station Bremerton and Naval Submarine Base Bangor, which combined to form the modern Naval Base Kitsap. Naval Base Kitsap is currently the largest navy facility in Navy Region Northwest, and has installations in Bremerton, Bangor and Keyport.

The history of Naval Base Kitsap dates back to 1942, when the area was used as an ammunitions dump and storage facility, which was used to fuel the Pacific Theatre. Shortly after, the navy purchased 7,676 acres in order to build a larger base. The base continued to be an ammunitions supplier until around 1973. Today, the base continues to train, equip, and host navy and other military personnel, as well as their families. The base is also know for going green with several hybrid buses, which are used as a primary method of transportation for many of the base’s workers.
